Focus IV The Urim and the
Thummim ‘Hebrew
numbers 224 and 8550’
So this week let’s focus on another verse from the weekly
reading in Vayikra (called Leviticus in the Greek), chapter eight, verse
eight. As has been our custom we will first quote the ‘KJV’ (King
James Version). Lev

Let’s try this, we will list each
Hebrew word on the left, then follow it with the English equivalent on
its right. Let this shed some much needed light here. Suwm-------------Set ha’choshen------the
breastplate wa’nathan-------and
give el-------------------toward
ha’choshen------the
breastplate (et /an object
marker, untranslated) ha’Uwriym------the
lights wa’et--------------and
ha’Tummiym---the
fullnesses, wholenesses or the integrities.
Can we ever come to know just what ‘Urim’ and the
‘Thummim’ are? Are they a physical entity? Do they have weight,
density, dimension, are they soft… or as inflexible as any gemstone?
Are these qualities or objects, values or valuables? And just who is to
possess these wondrous artifacts… or should I say, fully demonstrate
these priceless attributes?
Well, we can hope this can show a bit of light on the
‘U&T’ (Urim and the Thummim). Can we ever come to a full
understanding concerning this mystery?
It goes without saying that there
must be a reason the translator did NOT translate these key words. He
and many others have chosen to be vague rather than to clearly translate
the words with their full meaning. The meanings are not hidden, nor are
they across the sea.
So to further pursue this we could
get a bit of a glimmer from understanding as to the fullness and the
integrity of these strange and foreign words used here.
Uwr #217 from #215 Owr is a word meaning ‘light’ or enlighten
the ‘iym’ is like we would add an ‘s’ in our language, it makes
it more than one light (maybe for emphasis, kind of like brightness or
full cognizance?)
Tom #8537 means integrity or fullness, wholeness or completeness.
Again Tummiym is its plural, maybe for emphasis, again to indicate total
fulfillment and complete wholeness?
The published translations give the Hebrew word ‘el’ the
effect and force of ‘in’ or ‘into’ when ‘al’ or ‘bow’
would have had that connotation. When this word ‘nathan’ which means
‘to give’ is coupled with ‘el’ meaning ‘toward’ the obvious
statement would NOT be ‘to put in’, instead it clearly would assert,
‘to bestow upon’. To me any other implication would be an out and
out corruption of the text by the team responsible for decoding and
generating an understandable English version.
I found only six other places where the ‘U&T’ are
mentioned within the TaNaKH. These are found in: Exod
28:30, Num
27:21, Deut
33:8, 1
Sam 28:6, Ezra
2:63, and this repeated verbatim in Neh
7:65.
Please remember as you examine and
investigate that only the Hebrew can be trusted, everything else is
somebody’s pet version. In my opinion, if we were able to understand
these words that were recorded originally, we would be flooded with a
brightness of lights giving us full understanding.
I ask you to search and research
these ancient texts and discover the gems of great value hidden there.
As you turn over each word and weigh each grain of truth, share it with
all of us here. Soon we may uncover the many priceless treasures as yet
unseen by our modern world of mortal men. I feel these things were lost
along with the ark of the covenant and our national purity. With these
